Building websites for AI search: a developer's guide
People are asking search engines longer, more specific questions. For a service business, that makes a useful, well-built website especially valuable. The development work starts with making your information easy to reach and understand.
What does AI search change?
An AI answer may bring together information from several pages instead of simply presenting a list of links. Your website still needs to explain what you do, where you work, and why someone should trust you.
Google says its normal SEO foundations apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode. There is no special AI schema or required AI text file, and inclusion is not guaranteed. See Google?s guidance on AI features. This guide focuses on Google; other search products can have different controls.
Put important information on the page
A headline embedded in a photo is a poor place for your only explanation of a service. Write your service descriptions, coverage area, process, and common questions as actual page text. Use images to demonstrate the work alongside that explanation.
For a roofing company, a page about storm damage could explain what an inspection includes, which areas the company serves, and how to request a visit. Give the customer enough context to decide whether to call.
Ask your developer to confirm that the main content appears in the version Google can render. A page that looks complete in your browser still deserves a technical check.

Give each page a clear purpose
Start with a specific customer need. A dedicated page for emergency plumbing can answer different questions from a bathroom remodeling page. Link those pages from your services navigation and from relevant project stories.
Use headings that describe what follows. ?What happens during an inspection?? is more useful than a vague heading such as ?Our difference.? Answer the question directly, then add context. Avoid repeating the same paragraph across a long list of city pages.
Show evidence that belongs to your business
Original project photos, a clear description of the work, and practical explanations give visitors something they cannot get from a generic template. A short project story might explain the customer?s problem, what the team changed, and what the finished work looks like.
Keep business details consistent and distinguish real experience from general advice. If you publish a price range, explain what affects it. If you describe a result, have evidence for it. These are useful editorial habits, not a promise of an AI citation.

What to ask your developer to check
- Can search engines access the pages you want customers to find?
- Does each important service have a useful page linked from elsewhere on the site?
- Is essential information readable as text, including on mobile?
- Does structured data accurately describe the visible business information?
- Do inquiry forms and phone links work after the latest changes?
Keep a record of the pages changed and review inquiries as well as search visibility. Being mentioned in an answer only helps your business if the next step works for the visitor.
Start with one service page
You do not need to rebuild every page at once. Choose a service that matters to the business and improve its explanation, supporting evidence, navigation, and contact path. Use that page as a standard for the rest of the site.
Our custom website development work brings those pieces together. If your pages are missing from search entirely, start with the Google visibility checklist before focusing on AI discovery.
